How was Fine Woodworking founded

The company Magma was founded in 1983 by Manfred Gschwandtner as a sole proprietorship Gschwandtner.

After the company's purpose was originally aimed at the wholesale of machines and tools for woodworking, the focus in the following years increasingly shifted to the sale of high-quality hand tools.

In 1986 the Gschwandtner company became Magma GmbH, and 3 years later Martin Gschwandtner joined the family business.

In addition to the Japanese hand tools (Japanese saws, hand-forged chisels, planes), which have been famous around the world for centuries, the range has been significantly expanded: turning lathes, turning tools, turning accessories, carving tools & sculpting tools, a large selection of products for surface processing and treatment have since completed the range of woodworking products .

Since 1993 Magma has offered successful turning courses - for beginners as well as professionals.

In 1998 Martin Gschwandtner took over the management.

In 1999 the International Magma Demonstration Days celebrated the premiere, which made Magma known beyond the borders of Europe and which are still very popular with craft enthusiasts from all over the world.

Another milestone in Magma's history is the development of the “Magma Black Line Titan” lathes in collaboration with Markus Schumacher, which have been leading the luxury class since their market launch in 2008.

In our Magma Fine Woodworking catalog, which has been published for over 20 years, you will find a large selection of hand tools, lathes, turning tools, carving and sculpting tools, grinding machines, sharpening aids and whetstones as well as tools and materials for surface processing and surface refinement.

We look forward to your visit to the Magma Shop in Aurolzmünster, where we will be happy to provide you with advice and assistance.
