Use Freesync with Nvidia Geforce graphics cards

Freesync was only reserved for AMD Radeon graphics cards until the beginning of this year - and that has now changed.

So far, the image synchronization technologies Nvidia GSync and AMD Freesync were two separate processes. Both ensure a much smoother picture by synchronizing the output on the monitor with the graphics processor.

The Nvidia G-Sync process, which was developed by the graphics card specialist of the same name, is a relatively high investment. Because the umbrellas need an extra hardware module inside. In addition, the manufacturer has a certain quality requirement for the other equipment, such as the panel.

The alternative Freesync does not require any additional hardware in the screens, but only works in conjunction with Displayport version 1.2 or higher. Because from this version number the open standard "Adaptive Sync" is integrated, which enables a similar image synchronization as with G-Sync.

From the Nvidia graphics driver version 417.17 for the Geforce models from the GTX 1050 onwards, Adaptive Sync and thus Freesync are also supported. This means that interested parties can now choose from an even larger and, above all, significantly more attractive portfolio of monitors: There are currently around 550 screens with Freesync function, which come from different price ranges.

EnlargeFreesync can now also be used with Nvidia Geforce graphics cards. It is worth trying your screen even without an official manufacturer certificate from Nvidia.

At least only twelve models are officially certified by Nvidia so far. They carry the predicate "G-Sync Compatible" because they in turn also meet Nvidia's requirements in other factors such as the quality of the panel.

In principle, Freesync can always be activated. However, according to Nvidia, image errors can occur with non-certified monitors. Tests by some specialist media show that even screens without a certificate work flawlessly in conjunction with G-Sync. It is not yet possible to say whether this actually applies to all Freesync screens.

If you want to activate G-Sync on your Freesync monitor, simply click with the right mouse button on a free space on your desktop and select “Nvidia Control Panel” from the context menu. On the left under “Display” select the entry “Set up G-Sync”. Then check the box next to “Enable GSync, G-Sync Compatible” on the right-hand side of the window. If you want, you can activate the function not only for applications that run in full screen, but also for those that you use in windowed mode. Apply the settings and then switch to the on-screen menu of your monitor to activate Freesync there as well. Image synchronization is now active.

If there are display errors such as flickering or stuttering on your screen, try out some image profiles first. It may be possible to fix the errors in this way. If the deficiencies persist, you must deactivate Freesync again.
