What are some good cloud storage apps
Back up Android data - these are the best cloud apps
Dropbox & Co. have developed into proven backup storage systems. We will show you which protective measures the individual services offer and how you can use them optimally.
Saving data in the cloud has the advantage that you can access your content from anywhere in the world. However, this also applies to anyone who knows your username and has guessed or hacked your password. That is why it is all the more important to optimally protect your cloud storage with Dropbox, Google Cloud or Microsoft OneDrive.
The first step in securing your cloud is a secure password. Here we recommend a password safe with a password generator that creates a secure access for you and saves it for you straight away.
But the cloud providers also ensure that your data is stored securely.
Dropbox: Check security settings
The American provider Dropbox has existed for more than eleven years and now has well over half a billion users. However, things did not always go smoothly for the provider with regard to security issues. In 2016, strangers published more than 68 million login details. You can find out whether your account was also affected on the website “have i been pwned”.
In general, the architecture of the service presents some security risks. The main point of criticism is the central and unencrypted storage of your data on the Dropbox servers, which are therefore accessible at all times for Dropbox employees, but also for all authorities and secret services.
The transmission of the data is secured using the SSL procedure as standard. You configure all other security measures via the web interface in the settings of your Dropbox account. You will find all of the options available on the Security tab.
In order to make the correct settings, it is best to perform the security check first. It ensures that the e-mail address provided is still up-to-date so that you can use it to restore your password in an emergency. It also tells you whether your current password is really safe. And in there you will find a list of all devices and apps that have access to your Dropbox.
Tips & Tools:Get the most out of the cloud
You should check this list at regular intervals. Often there are still computers, smartphones or tablets that you have already retired and sold. As a rule, all devices that have not had access to your Dropbox for more than a year can be deleted without hesitation. With all recent entries, it is worth taking a closer look to see whether there are devices among them that do not belong to you. However, these could then be devices of friends or acquaintances to whom you have given access to a folder or a file.
After you have cleaned up the device list, there is a second list: the one of the browser through which you accessed your Dropbox. No further log-in is necessary on the associated devices as long as they are in the list and you have not explicitly logged off. It is best to delete all entries at this point. This means that you will have to log in again the next time, but no unauthorized person can access your Dropbox.
Dropbox: The two-step review
When you log in to your Dropbox, only your username and password are required by default. Two-factor authentication (2FA), which you can also find in the security settings, goes one step further. To register, she uses a combination of user and password as well as an additionally generated one-time code that you receive via SMS or an authenticator app.
Code by SMS: To activate the SMS variant, you will be sent a one-time security code via SMS to your stored smartphone, which you have to enter. After that, every time you log in to Dropbox - whether via the app or the web - after entering your login data, you will receive a code via SMS to your stored smartphone, which enables access.
Code via app: If you would like to receive the one-time code via an authenticator app, the Google Authenticator is suitable. After you have installed the app and set up two-step verification on Dropbox using the authenticator app, open your app and scan the barcode generated by Dropbox. The app is then able to generate a one-time password for logging in. The advantage of this method: The authenticator app also works offline.

Google Drive: The standard solution for Android users
The cloud solution from Google, which provides you with 15 GB free of charge, is the standard storage for many Android users. It is suitable, for example, for backing up WhatsApp data, but also for (automatic) saving of images. Through this combination, Google Drive has collected a total of a billion users.
As far as security is concerned, Google encrypts your data when it is transferred to its own servers, but also when it is transferred from Google servers to others. The stored data is only encrypted in the paid cloud variant G Suite for companies.
The protection settings for Google Drive are centrally linked to your Google account. To adjust it, log in to any Google service via the web interface, then call up your Google account and select the "Security" item.
On the page that is now displayed, you will find numerous security settings, overviews and security measures. Right from the start, you will be made aware of security issues, from a non-existent screen lock to an inactive account. Google offers you a suitable solution for each entry. It is best to work through this step by step at the beginning.
In the “Sign in to Google” area you will find all the information relevant to your Google Drive. In the “Password” section you can see when you last changed your password and can change it directly.
Registration via smartphone: An alternative to traditionally logging in to a Google account is titled “Log in using your smartphone”. It works in a similar way to two-factor authentication, as you have to confirm the registration with your Google account via a mobile device: As soon as you log in, you will receive a message to the stored number. If you confirm the message, you will get access to the Google account.
