Memorial Day in New York 2021

Memorial Day in New York is an important day. It honors all people who served in the US armed forces and died in the process. Memorial Day also heralds the start of the summer season, so it's not just a sad day of reflection. Many events take place on Memorial Day.

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day honors all men and women who served in the American military and died in action.

When is Memorial Day?

Since Memorial Day is always the last Monday in May, it falls on a different date each year. Memorial Day will take place on May 31, 2021.

Why is the day called Memorial Day?

Originally, the Union Army soldiers who died during the American Civil War were honored on Memorial Day. This changed after the First World War. Since then, all men and women who perished during their military service have been remembered. Before the Second World War, Memorial Day was still called Decoration Day.

What can you expect on Memorial Day?

On Memorial Day, many go to the cemetery or visit memorial sites to remember those who served in the armed forces and died in the process. The American flag hangs at half mast that day. Memorial Day is increasingly seen less as a day of remembrance and much more as the beginning of the summer season and thus cultural events. Many use the day off and the previous weekend to spend time with the family: picnicking together or going to a sporting event. As far as the fashion world is concerned, according to old tradition, you can wear white again from Memorial Day (until Labor Day). These days, this rule has been largely forgotten and most people wear white clothing all year round. This "rule" was coined by the wealthy who claimed that white was intended solely for weddings and health resorts and was therefore inappropriate for an autumn dinner.

What can you do on Memorial Day?

Since Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of the summer season (the summer solstice isn't until June 21), most beaches will reopen. If you want to discover a very special place in New York, you should definitely visit Governors Island on Memorial Day. There is then live music and other events, including for children.

Many New Yorkers leave town and spend their days off on a larger beach outside of town. You take time for the family. Traditionally there is a barbecue on this day. You can also have a blast on any of New York's beaches. In addition to Coney Island, the New York Aquarium (same address) will also be reopened. A visit is worthwhile and something for the whole family. If you're looking for other great things to do, be sure to check out Luna Park and ride the world famous Cyclone roller coaster!

Do you want to enjoy the nice weather and spend the day outdoors? Then take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge, which is also celebrating its birthday this weekend. Another great New York tradition is Fleet Week, which attracts thousands of marines to New York City every year. Chances are you'll run into a sailor. Not only do the sailors, coast guards and marines populate the city, there are also air shows and plenty of other events. And if that's not enough for you, head to the Intrepid Museum Sea, Air, and Space Museum on Memorial Day.
