Tradition in India
The classical Indian dances are very diverse and differ depending on the state and region. Despite these variants, there is an overarching dance culture in the Indian tradition. The classical Indian dance is of religious origin and so it contains gods, demons, heroes, princes and princesses. In all classical dances, the language of the body and the way of expression play an important role. Feelings are expressed through gestures, looks, and leaps such as courage, worry, fear, anger, determination, amazement, disgust, devotion, and redemption, etc.
In the tradition in India it is Kathakali an expressive form of the Indian dance drama. Characters with artistically painted faces and elaborate costumes tell stories from the Hindu heroic epics such as Mahabarata and Ramayana.
This classical dance form is based in the southern Indian state of Kerala and is a spectacular mixture of drama, dance, music and ritual. The dance drama is traditionally performed by men who also take on female roles.
The performers who divine origin are, have faces painted green; red stands for Heroes and a mixture of red and black is the Villains Reserved.
As in the Kathakali drama divine and mythological stories are portrayed, the contributors must appear tall and superhuman. This effect is achieved by clothing that is provided with numerous folds of fabric and a lot of jewelry, as well as by a gold-plated headdress and a mighty crown.
A dancer is usually only covered with a decorated shirt and puffed skirt and knee-length decorated trousers. In general, the legs and feet of the dancers are not covered with make-up as they are not visible to the audience on the traditional stage. The shirts are white and therefore clearly visible on the semi-dark stage; the spotlight is reflected in red sashes, gold jewelry, glass and precious stones. The Kathakali stage is at ground level; the audience sits on the floor.
The Kathakali dance moves are very stylized so that it is obvious that gods are represented.
Kathakali is very artistic. The performer has to control and learn to use every single facial muscle and practice for years to represent the details of the text. While the singer recites the verses of the piece, the actors present the text.
